Planning a Trip?

While you are temporarily out of the country or province of residence, the McGill Supplemental Health Plan offers you and your eligible spouse and children emergency medical coverage, provided your provincial health coverage (Quebec Health Insurance) continues.  Coverage is limited to trips of a maximum 90 days duration.  Refer to the McGill Supplemental Health Plan - Out of country/out of province services.

To remain covered by the Québec Health Insurance Plan, your stay outside the province must be less than 183 days in any given calendar year (Jan-Dec).

If you plan to be outside the province for 183 days or more, you must ensure that your coverage under the Quebec Health Insurance Plan will continue while you are away.  It is therefore imperative that you notify the RAMQ before you leave. Consult the RAMQ website  for important details.  Since you must have provincial plan health care in order to be covered by the McGill Supplemental Health Plan, if your Quebec health insurance does not continue, you will not be covered by the McGill Supplemental Health plan during your absence.

Travelling on University business

If you are travelling on University business (such as on sabbatical leave), coverage will continue past the first 90 days of your trip until you return, provided you remain eligible for provincial health care coverage (Quebec Health Insurance Plan/RAMQ). Refer to above information.

If you are travelling on University business you must register your travel information using the on-line Employee Business Travel form. Go to Business Travel Insurance.

IMPORTANT! Temporary Residents - travelling on University business or vacation take note:

The RAMQ imposes a 21-day travel restriction rule. That is, temporary residents may leave Québec for periods of 21 consecutive days or less and remain eligible for services covered outside Québec. However, if you leave Québec temporarily for more than 21 days, you will not be covered by the Quebec Health Insurance Plan during your absence.  Refer to the RAMQ website for details - Persons Staying in Quebec Temporarily.

Since you must have coverage under the provincial plan health care in order to be covered by the McGill Supplemental Health Plan, if you remain outside the province for longer than 21 days, you will not be covered by the McGill Supplemental Health Plan during your absence, whether you are travelling on vacation or on University business.  The trip limitations under the McGill Health Plan - Emergency Travel Assistance benefit do not apply.

For more information about emergency travel assistance under the McGill Supplemental Health Plan and how to submit claims, go to Out of country services .
