BI Architect (IST3E)
Position Summary: 
Elaborate and implement BI and Data Warehousing architecture and solutions that support informational business requirements. Oversee the evolution and integration of the different data models while ensuring the alignment with the enterprise conceptual data model, including the acquisition, transformation, flow-through, storage and publishing of data. Work with the BI team to identify potential data sources and transformation rules. Provide guidelines, establish best practices and oversee the deliverables of other BI team members. Work in close collaboration with the Enterprise Architecture group.
Primary Responsibilities: 
  • Elaborate the BI architecture for all components of the BI/Data Warehouse environments (Staging areas, Master Data Management, Operational Data Store, Enterprise Data Warehouse, Data Marts, Cubes)
  • Transform the business requirements into BI solutions
  • Oversee the development of the conceptual, logical and physical data models, ETL scripts, metadata definitions, work processes, and maintenance procedures
  • Design and oversee the development of the Data Marts and presentation layer (i.e. Reports, Dashboards, etc.)
  • Support other IT teams involved in the elaboration of IT solutions that include informational business  requirements; communicate and explain the solution; gain consensus; actively support the delivery of such solutions and ensure solutions are delivered as designed and architected
  • Research emerging technology to develop BI solutions and define BI principles and guidelines in alignment with the enterprise-wide orientation and vision
  • Ensure naming conventions and standards compliance
  • Refine and validate project scope and objectives for assigned projects
  • Provide expert assistance in solving complex technical problems
  • Provide professional technical leadership and consulting across the organization, from strategic decision-making to the project planning level.
  • Provide first-level review of vulnerability assessments 
  • Conduct risk and gap analysis
Minimum Education & Experience: 

Undergraduate degree (related field)

Five (5) years' related experience.

Other Qualifying Skills And/Or Abilities: 
Minimum 3 years as BI architect. Demonstrated experience in at least three (3) BI projects, of which one is a major implementation including the data model design of a SQL Server data warehouse environment. Solid expertise of BI/Data Warehousing end to end data transformation process and components (MDM, Staging, ODS, EDW, DM, Cubes, ETL, metadata, presentation layer). Solid expertise of the BI concepts (dashboard, KPI, metrics, etc.). Experience in working with data models – conceptual, logical and physical data modeling using relational and dimensional modeling techniques. Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft BI stack: SQL Server (SSIS, SSAS, SSRS, MDS), Sharepoint (Excel Services and PerformancePoint Services) and Excel (Power Pivot, Power View). Demonstrated effective communication, writing and planning skills and ability to explain abstract concepts to Subject Matter Experts who possess varying levels of technical expertise. Excellent conceptual, analytical and technical skills; ability to understand business needs and translate these into technical solutions. Demonstrated knowledge of Oracle, PL/SQL would be an asset. Demonstrated functional knowledge in one or more of these business domain activities: Higher Education, Finance, Human Resources would be an asset. Knowledge of the ERP concepts, web-application systems and client-server applications. Experience in working with third-party software and third-party suppliers. Knowledge of the following would be an asset: business process techniques (BPMN), Solution Delivery methodologies (Macroscope Productivity Center, Agile BI), SOA concepts, enterprise service bus. Self-motivated and ability to work well with multiple teams in cross functional set-up. Demonstrated ability to work on multiple initiatives simultaneously and to manage deadlines. Demonstrated ability to assess requirements and design solution of “right fit” and “right size”. English spoken and written. French spoken and read. *McGill’s current environment is SQL 2012 based.
