Information regarding your first pay cheque of 2010

The 1st pay cheque for a new year always raises numerous questions by concerned staff. This memo addresses these frequently asked questions along with a reminder of other useful payroll services.

Q. Why is my net pay so much lower on my first pay cheque of 2010 compared to my last pay cheque of 2009?

A. The following governmental deductions; Quebec Pension Plan (QPP), Employment Insurance (EI) and Quebec Parental Leave Program (QPIP) as well as the McGill pension plan have annual contribution maximums. As soon as the respective maximum is reached the deduction stops, only to resume again with the first pay of the new year. This can have a significant impact on your net take home pay in terms of deductions, including taxes.

Q. What are the changes in government deductions for 2010?

A. The EI rate has slightly decreased. The QPP rate remains the same, but there is a higher annual contribution ceiling. There is a slight increase to the QPIP rate. Both the Federal and Provincial governments have increased the personal tax exemptions. This on its own , will lower your taxes slightly but the other items mentioned here may actually increase your taxes until you reach the new annual contribution maximums once again.

Q. The cost of my staff benefits has changed, can you explain why?

A. Staff benefits coverage and rate changes took effect on January 1, 2010. This was announced in a general mailing to all staff in December. For more information click on the following link: Benefit Rates

Q. What are the changes in the Staff Parking Fees for 2010?

A. For those using the University Parking facilities, the monthly rates have changed for 2010. For more information click on the following: Parking Rates

Bank Deposit Service

This is a good time to remind everyone of the following popular pay cheque facility.

Everyone, without exception, should take advantage of our bank deposit service. However, there are still a number of staff who continue to receive pay cheques rather than a pay deposit into one's bank account. Unfortunately, all too often one is lost or stolen and the cheque replacement process is both time consuming and stressful. The following link on Minerva will enable you to complete a form and place yourself on our efficient payroll bank deposit service. (All it takes is your McGill ID and PIN.)
