Research interests

Research interests in my laboratory have been focused on the identification and functional characterization of genes that control the host response to infection with Gram-negative bacteria and to lipopolysaccharide (LPS), an abundant glycolipid of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria able to provoke a generalized proinflammatory response in the infected host. We are using a strategy of comparative genomics which consists of mapping and identifying genes for resistance to infectious disease in model organisms such as the mouse and then testing their orthologues as candidate genes for susceptibility to related infection in humans and in economically important farm animals. Using mouse models and an approach of positional cloning, we have identified two host resistance genes (Bcg and Lps) involved in innate response to infection with Gram-negative bacteria. We have developed novel mouse models of septic shock and chronic infection to identify novel genes involved in host response to Gram-negative infection using quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis.
