Slideware for Scholars (January 23)

Everyone uses slides, but few use them well.  When properly conceived and integrated with a conference talk or seminar presentation, slideware can be an effective part of any academic's scholarly communication repertoire.  But if not thought through, slideware can be distracting and can detract from the points a scholar tries to make.

Participate in this workshop and you will learn strategies for:

  • Preparing slides that complement the argument that you will deliver orally
  • Best practices for ensuring that slides are easily readable by audience members
  • Techniques for using slideware to manage audience members' attention during a talk or presentation

You should come to the workshop with:

  • A laptop computer that has slideware software installed, ideally Microsoft PowerPoint (available to all McGill students here), but alternative software is available (e.g. Google Presentation, OpenOffice Impress, Apple Keynote)
  • A degree of comfort using that software... or a degree of comfort asking the person next to you for help
  • A short paper, chapter, analysis or lab result that you would like to turn into a presentation

Tom Fullerton, a graduate student in the Department of Integrated Studies in Education, will lead the workshop.

The workshop will be held on McGill's downtown campus on Friday, January 23, from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.  Registrants will receive the workshop location in a confirmation email.
