Deadlines, Timelines and Deliverables

Deadlines can motivate academic writing, helping us to power through doubt and procrastination in order to submit that grant application, or send a chapter to an adviser. But they can also trigger panic and paralysis, when a piece of writing seems hopelessly far from the polished deliverable we want to achieve. This workshop will present strategies for making deadlines work for your writing process, and will give participants the opportunity to develop a timeline for a piece of work they aim to complete in the near future.

Participate in this workshop and you will:

  • Understand the motivational value and challenges of deadlines;
  • Reflect on the relationship between a polished deliverable and the ongoing process of writing;
  • Identify strategies for approaching deadlines proactively;
  • Chart a timeline for the completion of a particular piece of writing currently in progress.

You should come to the workshop with:

  • Your calendar for the next six months
  • A piece of work-in-progress you aim to deliver within that period. This piece of writing can be in any stage, from initial brainstorming to advanced development.

The workshop will be held on McGill's downtown campus on Wednesday, March 18, from 10 to 12 pm.  Registrants will receive the workshop location in a confirmation email.

Dr. Adair Rounthwaite, a SSHRC postdoctoral fellow, will lead the workshop.
