Tomlinson scholars

To honour Dr. Richard H. Tomlinson's generous contribution, an annual event is organized to thank him and illustrate the benefits of his offering. The event also creates an opportunity for Dr. Tomlinson to speak with all of the Tomlinson Scholars and to showcase their exceptional graduate research at McGill University. The Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies aims to create networking opportunities across disciplines and Faculties in Graduate Studies amongst the Tomlinson scholars and to professionally develop the participant’s presentation skills.
On Wednesday, March 27,2013, the following Tomlinson Scholars presented a talk on their research to share their ideas, research and inspiration with Dr. Tomlinson and their peers.
THE TALKS
Mr. Richard Cumming
Tomlinson Doctoral Scholar,Christian Thought and History Area, Faculty of Religious Studies
The concept of transcendence in the philosophy of John Paul II
This research explores Immanuel Kant’s celebrated critique of Rational Theology as it appears in the Critique of Pure Reason (1781/1787) and other texts, investigating Kant’s various treatments of the proof from possibility, which may jeopardise Kant’s pivotal claim that theoretical reason is secondary to practical reason in matters outside experience.
Mr. Vijay Kolinjivadi
Tomlinson Doctoral Scholar, Department of Bioresource Engineering, Faculty of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences
Nested Institutions, equity and the design of payments for watershed services
This research aims to link ecological management with efforts to improve human well-being and social equity in the management of natural resources. Specifically, an environmental policy known as ‘Payments for Ecosystem Services’ is critically examined through empirical analysis and a theoretical framework based on human capabilities and institutions of governance.
Ms. Josephine Iacarella
Tomlinson Doctoral Scholar, Department of Biology, Faculty of Science
Predicting the impacts of aquatic invasive species: management of at-risk habitats
Management of invasive species requires a predictive understanding of what causes a species to successfully colonize and impact a novel habitat. This research assesses how the functional traits (physiological tolerances and predation responses) of aquatic invasive species affect their impact in different habitat conditions. Developing predictions as to where invasive species may have adverse effects will help conservation efforts to prioritize at-risk habitats.
