New thesis review procedures went into effect September 1, 2011
The changes in procedures involve the following:
- Removal of the requirement to name three possible external examiners (with final selection by GPS). The supervisor (with consultation with the student) is still responsible for choosing the external examiner; now, an academic from the unit (as determined by internal procedures) will secure the examiner. Conflict of interest policies are clarified and emphasized.
- Supervisors are no longer allowed to act as thesis examiners of Master’s or PhD theses.
- Master’s theses require a single examiner, not two.
- PhD theses require two examiners: internal and external examiner.
These descriptions of procedures supersede the Thesis Submission Guidelines on the website, which are in the process of being updated.
Updated forms:
- Nomination of examiners and thesis submission form
- Procedure for contacting examiner
- Email template to contact external examiner
