Helping Graduate Students Edit and Revise

It's critical to develop a vocabulary to effectively identify and articulate what is problematic in writing and communicate strategizes for improvement. It begins with an understanding of the four cornerstones of academic writing – audience, purpose, organization and style.

The following resources were developed from a series of workshops with the goal of developing an efficient strategy for fostering clarity in students’ writing and providing some practical means for supervisors and graduate students to talk about and edit their own writing and that of others. The resources highlight the importance of articulating the organization of a discipline-specific academic article, paying attention to discipline-specific features of writing, and recognizing genre with a view to targeting their writing for a specific audience.
