$5 million generous gift from McGill alumni to the Faculty of Religious Studies
McGill alumni Barbara and Patrick Keenan, gave a transformative gift of $5 million to the Faculty of Religious Studies, as part of the University’s fundraising effort, Campaign McGill: History in the Making. This donation – the largest to the Faculty since its founding – will fortify teaching, research, scholarly collaboration and outreach related to the study of comparative religion and interfaith dialogue.
Desautels MBA students win 2013 Hult Prize - Boston Regional Finals with plan to solve urban hunger with diet of crickets
A team of five MBA students from McGill University’s Desautels Faculty of Management won the Boston Regional Finals of the 2013 Hult Prize in March for their plan to develop a manufacturing plant to grow edible crickets and decrease urban hunger. The MBA students competed against 42 other schools, including Harvard, MIT, and Yale. The Hult prize is a great start -up accelerator program dedicated to supporting social entrepreneurs. Each year, students work together to develop innovative social enterprises that aim to eliminate a social isssue selected by the committee.
AMERICAN ACADEMY IN ROME ANNOUNCES 2013-14 ROME PRIZE WINNERS
Congratulations to Mr. Ryan Bailey (right), a Ph.D. candidate in the Faculty of Religious Studies on his recent success in winning the Emeline Hill Richardson Pre-Doctoral Rome Prize. The American Academy in Rome is a leading American overseas center for independent studies and advanced research in the fine arts and humanities.

Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies is pleased to congratulate Dr. Jean-Philippe Lessard, an ecologist and postdoctoral fellow at the Quebec Centre for Biodiversity Science at McGill University, who has been selected as the April 2013 winner of an Étudiants-chercheurs étoiles award, from the Fonds Nature et Technologies of the Government of Quebec. Dr. Lessard has also been featured in the "Academic Minute" podcast for his work building a new map of the world’s zoogeographic regions.
Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Mourns Charlotte Légaré
We are deeply saddened to announce that our dear friend and colleague, Charlotte Légaré, passed away on Monday after a long struggle with cancer. Charlotte worked at McGill for 30 years. For over 20 years she was Director of Graduate Studies, but more than that, Charlotte was the heart of GPS. She will be greatly missed. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday May 4, 2013 at Urgel Bourgie funeral complex, 1255 Beaumont, Mont-Royal.
Graduate student Xenia Kurguzova wins SSHRC prize
Earlier this year, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) launched Research for a Better Life: The Storytellers, a competition encouraging Canadian post-secondary students to find innovative ways of communicating how funded research projects about people, behaviour, human thought and culture are beneficial to Canadians – and beyond. The winners will receive $3,000 and the chance to compete for a featured presentation at the next World Social Sciences Forum.
Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Celebrates the Life of Dr. Gordon MacLachlan
Emeritus Professor of Biology at McGill University, former Vice-Principal (Research) and Dean of Graduate Studies (1980-1990) Gordon MacLachlan passed away in early March, 2013. A professor at McGill University from 1962 to 1998, he is fondly remembered by fellow faculty members, students, friends and family. An obituary appeared in the Montreal Gazette on March 16. We celebrate Dr. McLachlan’s life and his contributions to the University and our deepest condolences are extended to Dr.
