Family Medicine in Montpellier, France

General Project Information
Type of Project:
Date of Experience:
03/12/2012 to 04/08/2012
Project Description:

Daily tasks included one-on-one shadowing by the doctor, where you would take the history and perform the physical exam, as well as discuss differential diagnosis and treatment plan. I had the opportunity to work with 3 separate doctors who all worked at the same family medicine office in the city. I also did home visits every morning and had the opportunity to visit a nursing home as well and care for the patients at the nursing home. I was also able to do vaccines on children and adults, as well as observe injections into joints performed at the doctor's office. I had the opportunity to attend lectures on 3 different days at the University of Montpellier which were geared towards residents in family medicine and which consisted of a half-day of small group sessions, followed by afternoon lectures.

Description of Student Experience:

The rotation was amazing! It provided me with the opportunity to get a sense of what family doctors do in a small town that does not have all the resources as we do in Canada. The doctors were all extremely welcoming and were great teachers. It provided a great opportunity to solidify my physical exam and differential diagnosis. I also had an opportunity to see a lot of psychosocial and psychiatry consultations in a family doctor's office which was great!
