Project Description: 

Founded in 2009 by now McGill graduate Victoria Lin, the Comparative Healthcare Systems Program (CHSP) aims to provide opportunities to compare and contrast different healthcare systems in order to improve the Canadian health care system . CHSP organizes an Annual Public Health Exchange to Taiwan, along with Guest Lectures and an Annual Global Health Conference.

The Taiwan Public Health Exchange provides a unique opportunity get an in-depth look at the Taiwanese healthcare system. In collaboration with Kao Hsiung University of Medicine and the Kao Hsiung Ministry of Health, McGill students will have a chance to explore and understand the Taiwanese health care system (which has an 80% public approval rating). There will be presentations by field-experts on a variety of topics including:

  • Epidemic disease control (SARS, H1N1)
  • Social health policies
  • Application of innovative technology for health care administration (SmartCard)
  • Comparison of Taiwanese, American and Canadian health care systems
  • Tours of various hospitals and major medical centres to observe the differences between private and public care

A variety of other scheduled events include a cultural exchange, an understanding of Aboriginal care and traditional medicine, a standard First Aid course, a tour and Q&A at the Department of Health, and tours of CDC-level research labs.
There will also be a pre-departure training including lectures, social events with program participants, meetings, and visits to health care facilities in Montreal.

Participating in the Comparative Healthcare Systems Program was a wonderful learning experience. The program was extremely well planned. I was able to visit many hospitals and medical centres and meet field experts in the areas of social health policy, epidemic disease control, traditional medicine and more.

The Taiwan Program is organized in collaboration with the Kao Hsiung University of Medicine, Shu Zen College, Kao Hsiung Ministry of Health, and Taiwan Ministry.

Travel Details: 
The 10 participants usually arrange their flight between themselves. It usually costs about 1500$ for the round trip.
