Residency Program Committee (RPC)

The primary aim of the Residency Program Committee is to ensure the highest standards of academic excellence in postgraduate general surgery training.  The RPC is aligned with the Royal College  accreditation requirements and was granted full accreditation in the last cycle. The educational programs are based in sound pedagogical principles and informed by adult learning theory. We are continuously evolving our education programs to integrate best practice in residency education. The Program ensures that our resident members are engaged in the design and delivery of the various curricula.  Resident members are excused from discussions regarding residents’ evaluations and promotions.

This Committee is responsible to the Head of the Division of General Surgery and the Department of Surgery and to the Associate Dean of Postgraduate Education. It’s tasks include:

  • Setting the educational goals and objectives and reviewing them periodically
  • The development and operation of the program such that it meets the standards of accreditation
  • Ensuring that trainees and the Faculty receive a copy of the educational goals and objectives
  • Establishing, organizing and regularly reviewing the educational components and the resources of the program (clinical facilities, teaching facilities, etc., to maximize the learning experience)
  • Oversee conduct of the program including rotations
  • Determining the admission standards to the program & participate in resident selection
  • Review evaluation of residents performance & making recommendations for promotion of the trainees
  • Establishment of mechanisms to provide career planning and counseling for residents and to deal with problems such as those related to stress
  • Maintain strict confidentially on issues pertaining to resident performance & selection

Residents may approach the Program/Associate Director or the Program Administrator at any time with concerns regarding the conduct or content of the program or other problems of a professional or personal nature.  Should a resident be reluctant to follow this route then the resident representatives on the RPC can act as the voice for the resident body as a whole.

The RPC reports through the Program Director to the Chair of the department or divisional Director, to the Associate Dean for Postgraduate Medical Education and to the Faculty Postgraduate Education Committee.
