Lactose or Sucrose Breath Test

Indication

To verify lactose or sucrose malabsorption.

Explanation

Hydrogen and methane are two gases produced in the lower digestive system primarily by the bacteria fermentation of carbohydrates (sugar, flour). If either of these gases appear in the expired air, it is usually a signal that carbohydrate fragments have not been properly digested and have been exposed to the bacteria.

How do we do it?

Your child will drink a sugary solution and we will take a sample of his/her exhaled breath.

Duration : Two hours

Preparation

Within 14 days of the test NO antibiotic The day before the test NO Dairy Product NO gas producing food (onion, cabbage, broccoli, beans, etc) Nothing to eat or drink after 22hrs The day of the test continue fasting
