Eagle Spirit High Performance Camp

About

The McGill University Eagle Spirit High Performance Camp is a 3-day camp aimed at empowering and encouraging Indigenous youth to realize their full potential in the areas of sport, education, career and personal development. The Camp was created in 2005 after the First Peoples' House was charged with the task of creating and implementing the Eberts' Outreach Fund strategy. The idea came from discussions focusing on the best process to meaningfully engage the Indigenous community and expose them to McGill University.

Sports play an important role in many Indigenous communities but athletic aspirations that focus solely on making it to the professional leagues is a one dimensional view of success that can be more limiting than empowering. Health and athletics are the cornerstones of the Eagle Spirit High Performance Camp. They are used to teach youth that true success is a balance of multiple dimensions including: academics, family, personal relationships, health, culture and self-esteem.

The success of the Camp is two-fold in that it introduces Indigenous youth to fitness, sport and post-secondary opportunities but it also builds and strengthens relationships between the Indigenous and McGill communities.

The Camp relies on the generosity of financial donors as well as the support of many members of the McGill community, including the Eberts Family. This camp would also not be possible without the in-kind donation of time and resources of McGill University’s Faculty of Medicine, as well as the Department of Athletics.
