Transfer of Credits

Study Away / Transfer credits for French as a Second Language

BE AWARE OF THE FOLLOWING RULES BEFORE REGISTERING

 

1. You must take courses offered by a university.
Courses offered by a Quebec CEGEP are NOT eligible for credit transfer (e.g.Collège linguistique de Jonquière or Cegep de Rimouski).

2. Transfer credits will be granted or withheld on the basis of:

  1. the assessment of a detailed outline for each course
  2. your post-test result

3. You will receive a maximum of 6 transfer credits for summer session courses that are successfully completed AND approved by the French Language Centre (FLC) at McGill.

4. If you attend Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (UQAC) under the auspices of the McGill-UQAC Student Exchange Agreement, you are exempt from both the pre-test and the post-test unless you plan to take French courses at the FLC the following academic year.

5. As there is NO GUARANTEE that credits will be transfered, you are advised NOT to take FSL courses at a host university during the summer session to complete the requirements of your degree for Fall graduation.

 

WHAT TO DO / WHAT YOU NEED BEFORE TAKING THE COURSE

 

1. Arrange to take a PRE-TEST even if you have not received confirmation of enrollment. If you are not currently registered in an FRSL course or have not already taken an FRSL course at the FLC, you MUST take a pre-test on one of the following days:

2. For Host Universities outside Quebec:
Obtain a "Letter of Permission Authorizing Study Away in the Summer Session" (from Student Affairs Office).

3. For Quebec Host Universities:
Obtain an "Authorization to Transfer Credits (IUT)" form (from Student Affairs Office).

  1. Submit the appropriate form indicating your French academic background, provide copies of your completed transcripts from McGill, any other University, CEGEP attended and from your High School, including any advanced credit exams.
  2. Have Centre form and other appropriate forms signed at the Centre.
  3. Submit all documents (signed) to Student affairs Office to obtain faculty approval for STUDY AWAY.

 

WHAT TO DO AFTER TAKING THE COURSE

1. Arrange to have two official transcripts sent to the Student Affairs Office DIRECTLY from the Host University.

2. Arrange to take a POST-TEST when you have returned to McGill.

3. Submit a detailed outline, including the method of evaluation, for each course, and a student copy of the transcript, to the French Language Centre at the time of the post-test.
