Pre-arrival checklist

Getting ready for university should be an exciting and worry free time in your life, so to help ease your preparations we’ve compiled a checklist of the top 15 important things to do before arriving at McGill.

  1. Make sure to accept McGill's admission offer online and pay your $300 deposit (not that this charge may vary on your program, consult this website).

  2. If you have been offered a space in residence, please fill out the appropriate surveys on Minerva (McGill's online registration system). If you haven't yet reserved a spot in Residences please contact the Residence Admissions Office at 514-398-6368 or by email housing [dot] residences [at] mcgill [dot] ca

  3. Bookmark the Welcome to Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies website and check back often. Consider it your essential survival guide to McGill

  4. If you are a Canadian student, submit your Proof of Canadian citizenship or Permanent Residency to Enrolment Services' Documentation Centre.

  5. If you are a Quebec resident, send your proof of residency to Enrolment Services' Documentation Centre as soon as possible.

  6. Log on to Minerva to ensure that your application file is complete and that all applicable documents have been received. You can also verify your registration and fee information and update your mailing address. If in doubt, call Service Point at 514-398-7878.

  7. If you are an international student, make sure you’ve completed and obtained all the necessary paperwork to study in Canada: a Certificate of Acceptance of Quebec, a Study Permit, and where applicable, a temporary resident visa or Convention Refugee status document. Copies of these documents must be submitted to Enrolment Services' Documentation Centre. For more information, please refer to the Pre-departure section of the International Student Services website.

  8. If you do not already have a permanent code, complete the Request for a Permanent Code Data Form and mail it back to Enrolment Services' Documentation Centre.

  9. Keep an eye on your emails for an invitation to register for Orientation. A link and instructions will be provided.

  10. If you are a Canadian student, you can request to be matched with a Student Life Ambassador, a senior graduate student in your Faculty that you can email with your questions about starting at McGill as a new graduate student. Request to be matched by completing the online application form.

  11. If you are an International student, you can request to be matched with an International Student Buddy by completing the online application form.

  12. Make sure to enter your Registration Confirmation by the deadline of January 6, 2014.

  13. Activate your McGill e-mail account through Minerva. This is very important!

  14. Bookmark the First-Year Office's Publications page for monthly updates.

  15. Read through the Handbook on Student Rights and Responsibilities, also known as the "Green Book."
