What to pack

Items Tips and Hints
Personal Items
Sporting equipment Roller blades, bathing suit, workout clothes
Photos/Decorations Bring some souvenirs from home — pictures of your family, friends and/or pets can add a lot of warmth to your new apartment.
Books Bring one or two of you favourites to balance out your course readings.
Camera There will be lots of memories to capture during your time at McGill. You don't want to miss them!
Health & Hygiene
Medical files, medications, Tylenol/Advil, and your Health Insurance Card If you have a medical condition, make sure to bring your medication with you. You may also want to ask your personal doctor to transfer your file to McGill Health Services so that your condition can be easily monitored.
Towels and washcloths
Shower shoes/slippers
Sunscreen Especially for the summer!
Raincoat & umbrella An absolute must in Montreal! And make sure your umbrella is sturdy because it can get pretty windy!
Scarf, mittens, winter hat, winter coat, winter boots Don’t underestimate how much you will need these items in winter!
Sweaters, jeans, long-sleeved shirts, etc. Make sure to pack your favourites.
Dress clothes (bring at least 1 suit & dress shirt, or skirt/blouse) For formal activities, school presentations, interviews, etc.
Pillows, pillowcases, sheets, blankets All residences, whether apartment style or shared-facilities houses have single sized beds.
Plates, silverware, and cups (enough for 1 meal)
Kettle and/or hot pot A "hot pot" is a multipurpose device used for cooking and boiling water.
1 pot and 1 pan Bring one of each if you will be cooking for yourself.
Dish soap/dish towel
Laundry basket or bag, laundry detergent, dryer sheets etc.
Tools (at least a hammer & Phillips-head screwdriver)
For Your Room
Alarm clock Make sure it is battery-operated. Power failures are no excuse for missing an exam!
Stereo, MP3 player, CDs, etc.
Fan Only New Residence Hall and Carrefour Sherbrooke are air-conditioned.
Telephone This will depend on the residence to which you are assigned. Consider purchasing a cell phone when you arrive in Montreal.
Extension cords
Plug strip with surge protector Extremely important for computer users!
Wall decorations If your suitcase is too full for more photos, you can buy cheap posters during the first week of school in the Shatner University Centre Building.
