Safety and security

DriveSafe

Drivesafe was created by the Students’ Society of McGill University (SSMU) to help decrease drunk driving among students. Event organizers must register for this service, which provides rides home anywhere on the Island of Montreal, the South Shore and Laval.

Books and bookstores

Your course books are an integral part of your university learning experience and can form the start of your academic library. It is important to have them for your courses so you can do the required readings and get the most out of your courses. Professors typically give a list of required texts on the first day of class. There is also an index available in the basement of the McGill Bookstore that lists the required books for each course.

Student associations

Students' Society of McGill University (SSMU)

As a registered undergraduate student on the downtown campus, you automatically become a member of the Students' Society of McGill University (SSMU). SSMU is responsible for several student life activities such as Frosh, mini courses, concerts and a variety of other events, not to mention all the clubs that they run! The list includes 200 clubs and organizations, such as Big Buddies, the Rotary Club, and Earthsave, just to name a few. There's something for everyone!

Tuition and fees

Calculating your tuition and fees

Tuition rates can range anywhere from $2,224 to $24,840 annually, depending on your faculty, the degree you're pursuing, the number of course credits that you are registered for and your residency status (Quebec, Out-of-Province Canadian, or International student). Visit the Student Accounts Office for detailed information.

Technology services

IT services

McGill offers a wide array of services to make you technologically savvy. The following bullets list some of the IT services available to you, complete with links to further information on McGill's IT websites.

Athletics

The Athletics department offers a wide range of sport and recreational activities to meet the needs and interests of the entire McGill community. Facilities include a swimming pool, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, squash courts, weight rooms, indoor and outdoor running tracks, an arena and a new state-of-the-art fitness centre, as well as the football stadium.

Student IDs

Your McGill Identification Card is an absolute necessity. You will need it to write exams, take out library books, use student services on campus, and even get student discounts at local retailers. You can get an ID on both the Downtown and Macdonald campuses, and must wait 24 hours after registering for at least one course to be eligible. Replacements for lost or stolen ID cards are available as well.

Cost of living

Estimated Annual Cost of Living

Montreal's cost of living, while lower than in many North American cities, is nonetheless a concern to many students. Budgets can vary, but below are some general estimates of living expenses that a single full-time student can expect to incur in a year, not including tuition and ancillary fees. If you are concerned about covering the cost of your studies, be sure to look into loan and bursary programs from McGill, your provincial government or your country of residence.

Where to shop

Several malls along Ste. Catherine St. are within walking distance of the Downtown campus, but for some less expensive options, consult our mini-list.
