Program Requirements

The activities and requirements for the rotation in Family Medicine have been chosen to help fulfill the objectives of this rotation. Recognizing the diversity of the sites and experiences available to students, only broad guidelines will be provided. At the mid-point in the clerkship the student should be given feedback by the supervisor. At the end of the rotation the supervisor should give final feedback to the student and complete the evaluation form. All students who undertake their clerkship experience in Montreal must attend core teaching sessions. The methods used are varied and include audio-visual presentations, clinical case presentations, demonstrations, role-play and seminars. The students are provided with a reading list and asked to prepare material for discussion at future teaching sessions. Students in rural or special sites are expected to read the material provided and discuss the topics with their supervisor or the person responsible for community health in the area.

Students are required to:

  • Read Part One of “A Textbook of Family Medicine” by Ian R. McWhinney and other reading material provided to them.
  • Keep a patient and procedure log on One45
  • Complete assigned clinical vignettes (information on Faculty of Medicine web site: WebCT (www.mcgill.ca/mycourses/, Family Medicine clerkship)
