Guidelines for students staying in Montreal or going to a McGill remote or rural site

1. Registration

Students can apply for a Montreal site or an affiliated rural site by completing the on-line registration form by the due date requested. The schedule will be sent by email to the students.

2. Request for changes

Flexibility for changes will be minimal. Advance warning is mandatory.

3. On-call

Call duty in Emergency Room may be part of the clerkship experience. On-call schedule covers evenings and weekends. In the remote areas, on-call duty is done according to local considerations.

4. Evaluations

Evaluation will be based on the student’s completion of required tasks. At the end of the rotation, the McGill University Department of Family Medicine Clerkship Evaluation Form is forwarded to the Faculty for each student. Site evaluation questionnaires will be completed by the student after each rotation.

5. Transportation

Paid by the affiliated hospital in the remote areas upon receipt of expense costs. Certain restrictions may apply. Car travel is reimbursed as per standard government criteria.

6. Lodging

In the remote areas, acceptable lodging is provided.

7. Meals

Paid by students, special arrangements are possible in some locations.

8. Coordinators for the Clerkship:

Dr. Leonora Lalla, Director, Family Medicine Undergraduate Teaching
Dr. Helene Rousseau, Director of Rural Programs

Guidelines for Students Requesting a "Special" in Family Medicine

1. Selection of Teaching Site

  • There are no geographic restrictions outside the immediate Montreal area.
  • The rotation is primarily an ambulatory family medicine experience. In-patient care can be part of this rotation only in so far as it represents an integral part of a family physician’s regular practice.
  • Initial intent to do a “special” should be indicated on the on-line registration form and submitted to the Department of Family Medicine. (Students will be assigned to a McGill urban site until final written approval).
  • A “Proposal for a Special” on-line request to be completed at: Special Request and submitted to Family Medicine indicating the following:
  • Group # and date of clerkship:
  • name, address, phone number, fax number and e-mail number of the supervisor. The supervisor must be a certified family physician affiliated with a university faculty of medicine, a department of family medicine, or a community physician in an accredited family medicine teaching site.
  • the identified supervisor must accept the evaluation criteria of the program, provide a weekly schedule or plan of study, and communicate in writing his/her willingness to accept the student. In some sites, supervisors will require the student to pay a fee. Therefore in your application you should inquire about non-specified fees.
  • if you are pursuing a special outside of Canada, you must have attended the Pre-Departure Orientation. For further details and to register: http://www.mcgill.ca/students/international/predeparture/.
  • The proposal must be submitted for approval at least three months prior to the beginning of the assigned Family Medicine Clerkship rotation. Students will be informed whether or not their “Special” has been approved within ten days of the deadline for submission for their group. Dates for submission for each group are as follows:
Group 1 October 22, 2012
