Introduction to Family Medicine Master's Option

The Department of Family Medicine at McGill University is excited to announce a new graduate program focused on providing research training to graduate students. The first of its kind in Canada, the general objective of the MSc in Experimental Medicine –Family Medicine Option is to increase the research skills and capacity of practicing family physicians interested in carrying out meaningful research relevant to the discipline and practice of Family Medicine.

Why research training in Family Medicine?

The complexities of contemporary societies pose increasing demands on healthcare delivery in general, and primary medical care in particular. A research-focused MSc in Experimental Medicine - Family Medicine Option will better prepare clinicians and researchers to face these challenges. Our recent international environmental scan found very few research training programs for graduate students in Family Medicine or General Practice. Existing Family Medicine Master's are largely professional, clinical, and education programs and do not teach the necessary research skills needed to conduct meaningful research in the discipline. In Canada, there are presently no similar research programs.

Who may apply?

The Family Medicine Option program is designed to provide research training to family physicians practicing in Quebec and who are interested in conducting research in family medicine. Other ideal candidates would be family physicians who are completing their residency and would like to continue with their education, specializing in family medicine research and obtaining a MSc. Exceptionally, we may consider candidates with a different background, such as allied health professionals, and undergraduate students across disciplines wanting to undertake research relevant to family medicine.
