Harvard Humanitarian Initiative International Conference on Crisis Mapping ICCM 2010: Haiti and Beyond

Just 3 months to go until the 2010 International Conference on Crisis Mapping (ICCM 2010)!

Shortly after the earthquake in Haiti, Secretary Clinton pointed out that the technology community had set up interactive maps to help identify needs and target resources. Crisis Mapping has also received extensive media coverage this year, ranging from CNN and NPR to the Washington Post and New York Times. ICCM 2010 will bring together the who's who in the crisis mapping and humanitarian tech space, policymakers, disaster response experts, scholars and donors to learn from Haiti and prepare for the next emergency.

This year's Conference will take place on October 1st, while the Annual Meeting of CrisisMappers will happen on October 2-3. Both events are being held in Boston and the agendas for both are available here: http://www.crisismappers.net/page/iccm-2010-haiti-and-beyond

Like last year's ICCM 2009, the public Conference will feature an exciting set of Ignite Talks, a Tech/Analysis Fair and a special Keynote. The Tech/Analysis Fair will provide a space to demo and discuss the very latest humanitarian technologies in the field. The Annual Meeting (by invitation only) will include Roundtables, Self-Organized-Sessions and other dedicated sessions.

Need another reason to participate in the Conference? Check out all the great things that last year's participants had to say! We now have over 700 members in our network, so please join us if you're new.

Be sure to register for the conference early to secure your space at ICCM 2010. We'll soon be sending out information on how to apply to give an Ignite Talk and where to sign up for a space to demo your projects at the Tech/Analysis Fair. So please stay tuned, spread the word and don't forget to register!

We look forward to seeing you all in Boston!

Meeting the Basic Survival Needs of the World’s Least Healthy People: Toward a Framework Convention on Global Health

Second Annual Lecture in Health and Law, Co-sponsored by the Resource Group on Health and Law and McGill Global Health Programs

Location: Maxwell Cohen Moot Court (room 100), 3644 Peel Street

Date and Time: Thursday, March 25th, 2010 – 16:30-18:00

For the Second Annual Lecture in Health and Law, the RGHL and GHP are delighted to host Professor Lawrence Gostin, Linda D. and Timothy O’Neill Chair of Global Health Law at Georgetown University. Dr. Gostin served as Associate Dean for Research at Georgetown Law until 2008. he is also Professor of Public Health at the Johns Hopkins and Georgetown Universities - a Collaborating Center of the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He is Visiting Professor of Public Health (Faculty of Medical Sciences) and Research Fellow (Centre for Socio-Legal Studies) at Oxford University. He is the Health Law and Ethics Editor, Contributing Writer, and Columnist for the Journal of the American Medical Association. In 2007, the Director General of the World Health Organization appointed Prof. Gostin to the International Health Regulations (IHR) Roster of Experts and the Expert Advisory Panel on Mental Health.

Abstract:

The international health landscape is increasingly crowded and complex. Global health efforts overlap, results are fragmented, and activities do not align with country priorities and capacities. Moreover, global health funding and interventions are skewed toward emotional, high-visibility events (e.g., the Asian tsunami), diseases that capture the public’s imagination (e.g., HIV/AIDS), and diseases with the potential for rapid global transmission (e.g., SARS and pandemic influenza). Instead, what is truly needed is to meet basic survival needs for the world’s most disadvantaged people and to focus on creating and sustaining effective health systems. In this lecture, Professor Gostin will make an innovative proposal for a Framework Convention on Global Health currently under discussion at the WHO and World Bank.
