Quick facts

  • The McGill Faculty of Law offers North America's only legal program that integrates both Civil and Common Law, in keeping with a trans-systemic approach to legal education. Our law graduates are recruited by prestigious firms in North America and around the world.

  • Study-abroad opportunities are available through partnerships with 500 Canadian and international universities.

  • McGill offers field studies programs in Panama, Barbados and Africa.

  • The new Bachelor of Arts and Science, established in 2004, enables students to combine two degrees to develop interdisciplinary skills and knowledge.

  • Students gain hands-on experience—often in other countries—while earning credits through McGill's many internship programs. Placements run the gamut from major companies in Montreal and government organizations in Europe to NGOs in Africa.

  • The Principal's Prize for Excellence in Teaching is awarded to outstanding professors every year to recognize their ability to engage students in the classroom. Over 20 professors have been honoured since the start of the program.

  • McGill academic units are divided among 11 faculties, 10 schools, the Centre for Continuing Education and Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

  • The COOL classroom (Courses On-Line) is an interactive web interface that uses online material to enhance and archive classroom lectures. Courses in chemistry, biology, pharmacology and nursing are all online and available to the public.

  • The Centre for Continuing Education offers diploma and certificate courses, including Management Studies, Information Technology, Spanish, Translation and new credit programs in French and English for Professional Communication.

  • The Tomlinson University Science Teaching Project conducts groundbreaking university-level science education research, and develops innovative and effective teaching methods among our science instructors.

New in 2005

  • Students have more opportunities to push the frontiers of knowledge through the new Office for Undergraduate Research in Science, which will connect professors with students to pursue research projects.

  • The new McGill Medical Skills Centre trains students in clinical skills using virtual-reality operations and "Randy," an interactive mannequin that can be programmed to mimic different ailments.

  • In a Canadian first, students from McGill's Faculty of Law and Department of English held a moot court using a code of laws drawn from the works of Shakespeare, providing opportunities for students from the two disciplines to collaborate and examine their fields from a fresh perspective.

  • Medical students will benefit from a new curriculum that, in addition to teaching clinical and scientific skills, will further develop their abilities to listen, observe and communicate better with patients and improve their abilities as physicians.

  • The Faculty of Dentistry is putting the "gum" into "gumshoe" with its unique online forensic dentistry course, which teaches students to apply dental science to legal and criminal investigations.
