Application Fee Refunds for Citizens Affected by the US Executive Order

Refunds for applications of citizens of Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen

Responding to the United States Executive Order limiting travel for the citizens of Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen, McGill confirmed its support for the Universities Canada (UC) statement. UC described the Order as an impediment to the flow of “people, ideas and the values of diversity essential to a healthy society.” To assist individuals whose academic plans had been restricted by the Order, McGill announced in June 2017, that it would refund the fall 2017 and fall 2018 fees paid for applications* to McGill University from the citizens of the listed countries.

Eligibility for refunds

Fees are refunded for applications* made by citizens from countries named in the Executive Order. Citizenship must be clearly indicated on the application form.

* Applications to the following programs qualify for refunds: undergraduate, graduate and Continuing Studies, including Post Graduate Medicine, Medicine, Dentistry and Law.

**Important note: Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada are not eligible for the application fee refund.

In order to receive a refund, the credit card from which the application fee was paid must be valid and functional, since refunds are issued ONLY to the credit card used to pay the fee.

The refund transaction

No action is required from the applicant or the fee payor to initiate a refund.  In July and August 2017, McGill is issuing refunds for eligible fall 2017 applications. In July and August 2018, McGill will issue refunds for fall 2018 applications. Refunds are assigned via the order numbers generated at the time of credit card payment. Normally, refunds appear on the credit card holder statement within 24 to 48 hours of processing.

Note: ONLY the credit card from which the fee was paid will be refunded. Application fees paid by an individual other than the applicant; such as, a parent, friend or educational consultant, are always issued to that individual. Due to security precautions, these processes are non-negotiable.
