Safer Spaces: Allies on Campus
Staff, faculty and student leaders who have participated in a Safer Spaces workshop on queer and trans issues are offered the opportunity to become Safer Space Allies at McGill. Being a Safer Space Ally is an important way to contribute to a climate on campus that fosters the acceptance and integration of people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. Safer Space Allies are people who:
- Believe that systemic and personal discrimination and harassment on the grounds of sexual orientation or gender identity is wrong
- Do not condone homophobia, transphobia or heterosexist actions in work, study, or living space
- Try their best to be sensitive to the needs of LGBTQ people on campus and who will respect the privacy of people who contact them
- Are willing to be compassionate listeners and to refer people who require more information or assistance to appropriate resources, but are not counselors or therapists

Some allies may choose to display a Safer Spaces poster or button in an easily visible place in their office or place of work.
