Book Awards

Robert Motherwell book award: The Robert Motherwell Book Award is given annually and carries a prize of $20,000 awarded to the author of an outstanding publication in the history and criticism of modernism in the arts-including the visual arts, literature, music and the performing arts. Nominations are normally made by publishers and the winner is chosen by a panel of distinguished scholars and writers. Publishers interested in further information or in making a nomination should contact Grants Administrator, Dedalus Foundation, at grants [at] dedalusfoundation.org.

Lilla A. Heston Award for Outstanding Scholarship in Interpretation and Performance Studies recognizes National Communication Association (NCA) members who have published research and creative scholarship in interpretation and performance studies. The award is given to authors of scholarship published during the previous three-year period. Nominations must be sent to the selection committee chair by someone well acquainted with the scholarship. Self-nominations are encouraged. DEADLINE: 1 April 2010.

National Communication Association (NCA) The Diamond Anniversary Book Award recognizes the most outstanding scholarly book published during the previous two years. 1 April 2010.

• Theatre Book Prize (Society for Theatre Research) (for a book of original research on any aspect of the history and technique of British theatre; play scripts or titles dealing with play texts as literature are ineligible). • Theatre Library Association book award: George Freedley Memorial Award honours a work about live theatre published in or distributed in the United States during 2007. DEADLINE: June 15.

• Barnard Hewitt Award for Outstanding Research in Theatre History (American Society for Theatre Research) (for a book in theatre history or cognate disciplines). Nomination deadline: April 15.

• Outstanding Textbook/Book-Length Study (Association for Theatre in Higher Education) (requires a nominator who is an ATHE member; for a book or book-length study about theatre administration, performance spaces, movement, voice, acting, as well as anthologies providing critical teaching materials in theatre arts and performance) (contact Ric Knowles, rknowles [at] uoguelph.ca)

• Anne Saddlemyer Award (Association for Canadian Theatre Research) (for a book in the field of Canadian theatre studies in either French or English) (nominations due December 31, 2008 to Jenny Munday )

• Errol Hill Award (American Society for Theatre Research) (for a book-length manuscript [research study, historical study, collection of essays] or a scholarly essay on African American theatre, drama, and/or performance studies). Nomination deadline: May 15.

• Research Award for Excellence in Editing (Association for Theatre in Higher Education) (requires a nominator who is an ATHE member; for individual achievements in editing of books, special issues, and so on; and for sustained achievement in editing over extended periods) (contact Kevin Wetmore, kwetmore [at] lmu.edu)

 

Article/Conference Awards

• ASTR Biennial Sally Banes Publication Prize will be given for the first time in 2009. This prize recognizes the book or essay judged by the awards committee to be the best exploration of the intersections between theatre and dance/movement in the two previous calendar years (2007-2008). Award amount is $500. DEADLINE: 30 November 2008.

• Jean-Cléo Godin Award (Association for Canadian Theatre Research) (for an article in French) (nominations due December 31, 2008 to Jenny Munday)

• Richard Plant Award (Association for Canadian Theatre Research) (for an article in English) (nominations due December 31, 2008 to Jenny Munday )

• Research Award for Outstanding Article (Association for Theatre in Higher Education) (requires a nominator who is an ATHE member; for an article on dramatic texts or performances; the article must be nominated by a journal editor) (contact David Roman, davidr [at] usc.edu)

• The Amy and Eric Burger Essays on Theatre Competition (University of Wyoming), for the best unpublished essay in English on any aspect of drama or the theatre of 1,800 to 7,500 words. DEADLINE: postmarked by March 11.

• New Scholar’s Prize (International Federation for Theatre Research) (for an essay by a scholar under the age of 35, or who will have not completed a Ph.D. before May 2008; the essay can be on any topic related to the scholar’s current research) (contact S.E. Wilmer, swilmer [at] tcd.ie)

• ASTR Selma Jean Cohen Conference Presentation Award encourages plenary papers or working session entries by scholars in dance and movement-based fields. It will help the winner meet hotel and travel expenses required to attend and present at the annual ASTR meeting. Total award amount is up to $1,000. DEADLINE: 15 March.

 

Other

• Brooks McNamara Publishing Subvention (up to $600), supports the costs of securing rights to reproduce illustrations for publication, costs of acquiring illustrations, and/or the costs of reproducing illustrations in conjunction with a book under contract for publication. DUE: March 15.

• Distinguished Scholar Award (American Society for Theatre Research) (for a scholar whose body of work has made a significant contribution to the field of theatre, dance, opera, and/or performance studies). DEADLINE: March 15.

• Visiting Scholars Exchange promotes the transnational exchange of research--especially research in areas under-represented in U.S. theatre scholarship--by supporting visits from scholars who work abroad. Award amount is $2,000 per year. DEADELINE 15 March 2008.

• Targeted Research Areas Grants (American Society for Theatre Research) are intended to support projects in areas historically under-represented at ASTR, such as pre-1900, Asian, African, Latin American, and Middle Eastern theatre, dance, and performance. Translations of important theatre documents, including plays, will also be considered. A total annual award amount of $4,000 will be divided among the highest-ranking projects. DEADLINE: 15 March 2008.
