Faculty of Engineering Final Examination Regulations and Procedures
- Regulations
- The Examiner and/or Associate Examiner for all final exams must be readily available for questions or consultation during the full duration of their examination.
- Students are not permitted access to any books, notes or other material or devices containing information or capable of processing information pertaining to the examination unless the examiner has given instructions that such material or devices will be allowed. Students must not use or attempt to use any unauthorized source of information.
- Unless specified otherwise by the course instructor and only with the approval of the Associate Dean (Student Affairs), students may only use Faculty Standard Calculators for examinations in which calculators are allowed. Under these circumstances, no other calculators will be permitted, regardless of their level of sophistication.
- Translation dictionaries are permitted except in courses where knowledge of a language is one of the objectives of the course. Translation dictionaries must not include any definitions or synonyms. Other dictionaries (thesaurus, definitions, technical) are not allowed unless otherwise specified by the examiner. Electronic dictionaries are not permitted, whether they are translation or otherwise.
- Cell phones and all other communication devices must be turned off and must not be in the possession of the student during the exam.
- Students must have their student identification card when entering the examination room. Students must place their identification on the desk to be verified by an invigilator.
- Talk or any other form of communication between students is forbidden during the examination period.
- Examinations will be placed faced down on desks. Students will not be permitted to turn over and begin the examination until the invigilator announces that they may do so.
- Students must remain seated until permission is given to move. If a student needs to speak to an invigilator (e.g., to ask for additional supplies or to request permission to leave the examination room for any reason), he/she should raise his or her hand to signal the invigilator.
- The invigilator is not permitted to answer questions other than those concerning the administration of the final examination.
- Students are not permitted to leave the examination room until one hour after the examination has begun, and under no circumstance before the attendance has been taken. Students may not leave the examination room during the last fifteen minutes of the exam. Students that leave the examination room without permission will not be allowed to re-enter the room to continue the examination.
- Once the end of examination period has been declared by the invigilator, students must immediately stop working on the exam and cooperate with invigilator's instructions for exam submission or collection. All students must remain seated and silent until the invigilator has given them permission to do otherwise.
- Students must hand in all completed and attempted work. Students must hand in the full exam question paper and/or supporting materials when this has been specified by the examiner.
Procedures
- It is assumed that upon entering the exam room, it is the intent of the student to complete the examination. Students are warned that it is their personal responsibility to judge their own state of health before entering the exam room to assess whether they are able to undertake the examination.
- Where students feel that they are unable to write the exam due to uncontrollable circumstances, they must follow procedures for requesting a deferral. Please visit the Faculty of Engineering Deferral website.
- Students writing examinations are responsible for arriving at the right time and place. Forgetfulness, lateness or arriving at the wrong place and the wrong time cannot be considered acceptable excuses.
- In addition to the University Exam website, exam locations are posted on the TEN screens prior to the exam start time in the McConnell, Macdonald, Wong, and Trottier Engineering Building lobbies only.
- Students will be permitted to enter the examination room quietly up to an hour after the scheduled start of the exam (no extra time given to the student). After this time, they will be admitted only by special permission of the Deputy Invigilator or the Student Affairs Office.
- Any material brought into the examination room may be subject to inspection.
- Questions concerning possible errors, ambiguities or omissions in the examination paper should be directed to the invigilator, who will investigate them through the proper channels.
