Volunteering

Donate your time
McGill offers hundreds of ways for you to get involved and make a difference. Browse through the links below for a few ideas.
Student Services and First-Year Office
McGill offers a wide variety of volunteering opportunities that make a difference on campus, build your skills and enhance your own experience while increasing your employability.
The First-Year Office relies on the energy and enthusiasm of hundreds of student volunteers each year. Volunteer recruitment takes place in the Winter semester for the upcoming orientation and welcome of next year's incoming class.

CaPS Peer Educator Program
Peer Educators are the link between all McGill students and CaPS. The program is designed to raise awareness of the services offered by CaPS by having a group of dynamic students represent us on campus.
There are three major roles that a Peer Educator can take on:
- Outreach and Liaison
(i.e. helping to facilitate events, having a presence in high traffic areas on campus) - Advertising & Publicity
(i.e. distributing information, postering around campus) - Education
(i.e. giving Info Sessions, reviewing CVs)
A person is not limited to one role and can easily overlap into each of the three roles. It is up to you how much time you would like to commit and what area you would like to work in. We suggest a minimum of two hours a week on average (we understand during midterms and exam periods this commitment cannot always be met). We encourage you to try all three roles to see which area you like the most.
Contact CaPS for more information.
Community Action Toolkit
The Community Action Toolkit (CAT) is a community engagement and leadership challenge created for McGill undergrads. Participants choose to volunteer on custom-made projects provided by community-based, social justice and sustainability organizations and NGOs around Montreal and from within McGill.
A time commitment of 3-4 hours a week during 3-month or 6-month period during the academic year is expected. Incentives, including course credits are also available following consultation with faculty professors.
The goal of CAT is to enrich the learning experience and provide students with a support network and resources through which they can engage deeply in work that addresses real societal challenges, while acquiring concrete skills, valuable experience and an exciting opportunity to learn and grow in a real-life setting.
Students will be supported by mentors, a peer-support group made up of other CAT participants and by CAT HQ through the term of the project.
CAT Community Partners include:
- The Hidden Gems Storytelling Project (Milton-Parc)
- AIDS Community Care Montreal (Plateau-Mont-Royal)
- Share the Warmth (Pointe-St-Charles)
- The Social Justice Committee (Downtown)
- Project Genesis (NDG)
- South Asian Women’s Community Centre (Plateau-Mont-Royal)
- Saint Columba House (Pointe St-Charles)
- Tyndale St-Georges Community Centre (Little Burgundy)
- the Multi-Ethnic Association for the Integration of Persons with Disabilities (Mile-End)
- the Student Society of McGill University (SSMU).
Projects available include workshop development, community outreach, tutoring clinic development, public education, fundraising, food-drive coordination, oral storytelling, and more.

Ambassadors share personal experiences, advice and direction. What is it like to live in residence? What types of courses can you take? What extra-curricular activities can you get involved in? How do you handle the winter months in Montreal?
