ECP Welcomes Professors Eve-Marie Quintin and Marina Milyavskaya

Dr. Eve-Marie Quintin will be joining the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology in August 2014 as an Assistant Professor in School/Applied Child Psychology. Dr. Quintin holds a Ph.D. in Psychology from the Université du Québec à Montréal. She worked as Postdoctoral Researcher at the Georgia Institute of Technology, School of Psychology, and is a registered psychologist and neuropsychologist through the Ordre des Psychologues du Québec.

MOOCs and GROOCs on the move

McGill’s initial experiment with Massive Open Online Courses, or MOOCs, has been a success and the first offering, Food for Thought, will be repeated next year. More than 32,000 people from 160 countries, with an average age of 35 (a bit younger than normal) signed up for the MOOC. Almost 1,800 people completed all elements of the course, and another 7,000 people completed at least one assignment or test.

Congrats to Arzina Zaver on recently being named a Graduate Student Representative for the Canadian Association for Teacher Education (CATE). Arzina’s role will include planning the graduate student session at the annual Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CSSE) conference.

DISE Graduate Dr. Ghada Chehade Wins Best Dissertation Award

Congratulations to Faculty of Education PhD graduate Dr. Ghada Chehade on winning the award for Best Dissertation in the Field of Rhetoric, Writing Studies and Discourse Analysis from the Canadian Association for the Study of Discourse and Writing. Ghada is a graduate of the Department of Integrated Studies in Education and a supervisee of Dr. Anthony Paré and Dr. Steve Jordan.

Retirement Celebration for Dr. Lise Winer

In May, DISE held a remarkable retirement party for Dr. Lise Winer. Lise has been part of the McGill community for many years, recently taking on the role of Graduate Program Director. She also possesses an outstanding record of intellectual achievement on the topic of Caribbean Creole. The affection and respect with which Lise is viewed was reflected in the size and tone of her retirement party, which featured singing, dancing, and a decadent cake. Lise will be very much missed, but we all wish her well in all of her future endeavours-- and we know she has plans.

ECP's Professor Burack Interviewed in the Canadian Jewish News

Dr. Jacob Burack, Professor in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, was recently interviewed in Canadian Jewish News for his research in the development of attention and cognition among typically developing children, persons with autism, and persons with specific syndromes associated with intellectual disabilities.
