Dr. Brian Alters

Promoted to prestigious endowed chair, director of an $8 million project, Expert Witness in U.S. Federal Court, author of numerous books on biology and evolution education, winner of university-wide teaching award, also appointed at Harvard, and is reported about worldwide.


More specifically, Dr. Alters is the Tomlinson Chair in Science Education; Director, Tomlinson Project in University-Level Science Education (T-PULSE); Director, Evolution Education Research Centre; Sir William Dawson Scholar; winner of the Principal’s Prize for Excellence in Teaching; and has held an appointment in the Harvard College Observatory at Harvard University for 10 years.

He has been a member of McGill’s Faculty of Education for over eight years. In September, Dr. Brian Alters was promoted to the Tomlinson Project in University-Level Science Education (T-PULSE). These endeavors represent an $8 million endowment from a generous gift of Dr. Tomlinson to McGill University for science education. While Dr. Alters will remain a member of the Faculty of Education, he is now also appointed in McGill’s Faculty of Science to assume responsibilities in university-level science education research and development.

Dr. Brian Alters is an expert witness in a U.S. federal trial

Dr. Alters is a global leader in the field of evolution education and author of the best-selling Defending Evolution in the Classroom. This year, he was recruited as one-of-six Expert Witnesses for the plaintiffs in a United States Federal trial on biological evolution, education, and the United States Constitution. It is expected that this high-profile trial will be a precedent-setting test case for the nation. Dr. Alters’ testimony was reported in hundreds of media outlets worldwide including TV, Radio, Associated Press, MSNBC, ABC, CBC, and even Rolling Stone (cover article).

Dr. Alters is also the founder and Director of the Evolution Education Research Centre at McGill University. It opened its doors at McGill with four McGill professors and four Harvard professors who have expertise in anthropology, biological evolution, educational psychology, geology, molecular biology, paleontology, philosophy of science/education, and science education. On-site research is currently being conduced in Pakistan, Indonesia, United States, and throughout Canada.
