McGill Research Centre for Physical Activity and Health Seminar Series

"Indigenous Approaches for Promoting Child Health in Schools"

Culturally-based approaches to health promotion are essential for successful research partnerships between universities and Indigenous communities. Beginning my career as a “hard-line” exercise scientist, I will explore the path I took away from reductionist science and towards holistic approaches to disease prevention for Indigenous youth. I will describe the importance of this transformation as it applies to the two large research teams I currently lead and the network for type 2 diabetes prevention we created within the CIHR Pathways to Equity Initiative. Finally, I will reinforce the notion that remaining “undifferentiated” as a trainee and young investigator is key to a successful and fulfilling career in exercise science.
