Admission Requirements
- There are two entry levels and patterns in the Ph.D. program. The specific requirements to be admitted at each level are as follows:
- Ph.D. 2 Level
Applicants should hold an M.A. in Educational Psychology from McGill or a recognized equivalent degree. This degree should reflect high overall standing, study within the area of the proposed doctoral specialization and evidence of research competence. - Ph.D. 1 Level
Applicants should hold an M.Ed. in Educational Psychology or a Master's degree in a related discipline (e.g., sociology, social work, counselling psychology) lacking only the content in educational psychology that can be acquired within one year of full-time study. The applicant's academic record must reflect high overall standing and evidence of research competence.
- Ph.D. 2 Level
- All doctoral students must have a research supervisor upon entry to the program. Applicants should consult the list of Human Development professors to select and contact prospective supervisors.
- All applicants must have a minimum CGPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 or higher.
- Please note: It is essential to clearly identify your desired stream of study on your application (Learning Sciences or Human Development).

Below is a checklist of all materials that are needed for a complete application to the Ph.D. in Educational Psychology, Human Development Stream.
- Completed McGill online application form.
- Two (2) official copies of all university transcripts (sent directly to the Department)
- Three (3) completed Human Development Reference Letter Form [.doc]
- For International Students Scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) (sent directly to the Department)
- A current Curriculum Vitae listing research experience to be completed on the provided form here: Human Development Curriculum Vitae Form [.doc]
Please type directly into this template and adjust the format accordingly. Please do not write by hand. - A personal statement of interest, 1-2 pages in length and must include the following information:
- your reasons for applying to the program
- your career aspirations
- any information relevant to your application to which you would like to direct the attention of the admissions committee
You must attach to your Personal Statement the following form: Human Development Personal Statement Forms [.doc] . Please type directly into this template and adjust the format accordingly. Please do not write by hand.
- A research Proposal: This proposal should be two pages long and should demonstrate the applicant's ability to develop an academic research proposal. Note that this document will be used for evaluation purposes only.
You must attach to your Research Proposal the following form: Human Development Research Proposal Form Ph.D. for Students [.doc]
Please type directly into this template and adjust the format accordingly. Please do not write by hand. - Notification of prospective supervisor/s. Candidates should consult the list of Human Development professors to select and contact prospective supervisors.
- Please complete the Human Development Personal Statement Forms [.doc] to indicate the faculty member(s)/professor(s) with whom you have a supervisory agreement.
- Ph.D. applicants must also ask their respective supervisors to submit a letter to confirm their agreement to act as their Ph.D. supervisor upon admittance to the program (submitted directly to the department).
- Applicants to the stream of Human Development are encouraged but not required to submit scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) (general subject tests; sent directly to the Department)
Application Deadline is January 15th, of each year for the Fall (September) admittance.
