Master of Arts in Teaching and Learning

NEW APPLICATION DEADLINE: January 15th, 2012 for Summer 2012 admission.

The Master of Arts in Teaching and Learning (MATL) is a post-degree program leading to a Master's degree as well as teacher certification at the secondary level for those meeting specific criteria. Please refer to the information below which aims to respond to the following questions: Who is eligible? How do I apply? When does the program begin? How long will it take?

Who is eligible?

Applicants should meet the following requirements:

  1. Possess an undergraduate degree.
  2. Have at least 45 credits (university level) in the area of certification. Use the Background Specifications for Subject Area document and the appropriate 'Subject-Area Background Self-Assessment Grid' (see list below) to self-assess whether your background meets the 45 credit minimum requirement in the appropriate subject area (the appropriate completed ‘self-assessment grid’ must be submitted as a supporting document with your application). These areas are:
  3. Experience working in formal or informal education or youth sector. This includes, but is not limited to, current employment as a teacher in a school in Quebec or currently registered on a School Board supply teaching list.

How do I apply?

If you are eligible according to the criteria above and are interested in applying into this program, the deadline for applications is January 15, 2012.

Application Instructions:

Apply on-line for Admission to McGill University’s Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Office. Click on the red icon at the top right which says “Apply Now”. Follow the application process for graduate studies, Summer 2012, through the Department of Integrated Studies in Education (DISE). Students should apply into the Masters of Arts in Teaching and Learning. Please make sure to indicate which concentration area you wish to be certified in (select English Language Arts, English Second Language (TESL), Mathematics, Science & Technology, or Social Sciences).

Submit the following supporting documents:

  • A current CV
  • A 1-2 page Letter of Intent, specifying relevant academic and professional experience, particularly experience related to education or other work with youth, and outlining your reasons for pursuing the teaching profession. In addition to the importance of subject matter expertise, please comment on your commitment to the social, ethical and political responsibility inherent in the teaching profession.
  • A completed Subject-Area Background 'Self-Assessment Grid' (available above)
  • Two sets of official transcripts of all previous undergraduate and graduate level studies. Please note that the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies department stipulates that all students must have at least a 3.0/4.0 GPA in order to be considered for admission.
  • Two letters of recommendation, one from a university-level instructor and the second from a professional who has supervised you in a formal or informal education or youth sector position (if you have experience working in a formal school setting, one letter must be from a school / school board administrator qualified to acces your professional qualities). Both letters must be on institutional letterhead with original signatures; no standard evaluation form is required for this purpose.

When does the program begin?

Students must begin the program with designated courses in the MATL Summer Instititute in July 2012.

How long will it take me to complete this program?

This 60 credit program can be completed in 15 months on a full-time basis or 27 months on a part time basis. Students have up to 5 years to complete the program.
