Differential Fee Waiver (DFW)

The Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Office (GPSO) offers a limited number of DFWs in the Summer term to international Master's students (and exceptionally to doctoral students) who are required to be registered full-time. These reduce international tuition fees to the equivalent of Canadian fees. These awards are based entirely on academic merit.

How your application for DFWs are processed in the Department:

The Fellowships Office at McGill distributes the DFWs to the Departments according to a formula based on the number of international students in a department and average funding per Canadian student. They notify the Department about the quota assigned for the Summer term.

The Department sends an email to all registered international graduate students announcing the deadline to submit DFW applications to the Department.

The Graduate Programs Office calculates the CGPA of each applicant based on their McGill graduate record and their previous academic record. As the number of DFWs allocated is limited, the competition is quite intense. Candidates must have obtained a first class average (at McGill, a minimum of 3.5/4) in each of the last two completed years of study.

The Graduate Financing Committee ranks each application and nominates top ranked candidates to GPSO. Please note that the number of DFWs allocated each Summer varies.

If granted, the value of the DFW will be credited to the students' fee account.
