Strategy & Organization

What is Strategy and Organization and who are we?

The Strategy and Organization Area focuses on research and teaching that addresses the strategies and structuring of organizations, the process by which strategies form and change, their social determinants, and the relationship between organizations and their economic, political, social and natural environments. We study and teach management from a holistic and integrative perspective to understand important real-life phenomena as well as theory-building. We address strategic management and organizational issues in both domestic and international contexts.

The Strategy and Organization Area is a diverse group in terms of disciplinary backgrounds, theoretical and methodological approaches, and research topics. We intentionally have faculty from multiple disciplines, including sociology, economics, history, political science, and management. Our faculty employs a variety of research approaches, from inductive ethnography to archival studies to simulation and quantitative methods. Similarly, our research questions address a range of phenomena related to corporate, business, competitive and collaborative strategies; organization theory; international business; innovation; strategies of enterprises in developing and transition economies; and the environmental and social impacts of business. We value this diversity, recognizing the eclectic nature of strategy, entrepreneurship and organization studies.

The faculty in our Area develops innovative teaching programs and novel pedagogical approaches that provide our undergraduate, graduate and practitioner students with expertise in multiple domains. At the undergraduate level, we offer concentrations in Global Strategy, Social Context of Business, and Entrepreneurship. At the MBA level, we offer a concentration in Global Strategy and Leadership. We offer innovative practitioner education for managers such as the International Masters Program in Practicing Management, the International Masters for Health Leadership, and the Advanced Leadership Program. Our PhD program is designed for talented and motivated students with the initiative and courage to shape their own research program; while providing solid grounding in theory, methods, and current management practice. Graduates from our PhD program are recruited by leading academic institutions. Our students and professors are from many countries, creating a cosmopolitan climate that mirrors Montreal's cultural diversity.
