Social Learning for Social Impact
McGill University GROOC (Group MOOC)
What’s a MOOC?
Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are aimed at unlimited and free participation via the web. In addition to traditional course materials (such as videos, readings and problem sets), MOOCs provide interactive user forums that help build communities for students, professors and teaching assistants.
What’s a GROOC?
MOOCs extend the learning of conventional classrooms to individuals around the world. For the full appreciation of human endeavors – pertaining to learning in the classroom as well as carrying that learning into practice – MOOCs have largely overlooked the vast potential of social learning, whereby the learners engage each other in the process of knowledge creation.
A Group MOOC or GROOC involves people working and collaborating in groups in order to share their knowledge and experience with others. This results in a more integrated approach to learning and problem solving.
Our experience with Social Learning
We have been engaging managers in social learning for almost two decades, in novel programs such as the International Masters in Practicing Management, the International Masters for Health Leadership, the McGill-HEC Montreal EMBA, and our uniquely integrated MBA. These programs have put McGill at the forefront of pedagogical innovation.
What will the GROOC cover?
This GROOC will expose participants to social learning for social impact, encompassing the following topics: Engaging, Strategizing & Organizing, Designing, Resourcing, Assessing and Scaling - across the stages of start-up, development and proliferation. The faculty will comprise top international practitioners and academics who combine the best thinking with the most effective doing. Participants will collaborate on a social initiative through a unique pedagogy that facilitates learning from one another. They will form groups using an online match-making platform that transcends geographic and issue boundaries.
The goal of our GROOC is two-fold:
- To inspire the creation of social initiatives (e.g. The Grameen Bank, Doctors without Borders, Green Belt Movement, Khan Academy, among others)
- To drive radical renewal in society beyond left, right and center*
This GROOC is intended for people:
- Already working within the social sector to address a social issue and/or advance a social cause.
- Thinking about contributing to a social initiative.
- Concerned about where the world is headed and seeking constructive ways of responding in collaboration with others.
Expected launch: Fall, 2014
