Sustainable Innovation through Green Chemistry Workshop and Case Competition
On February 10-11, 2017, the Marcel Desautels Institute for Integrated Management (MDIIM), CREATE in Green Chemistry, and the Trottier Institute for Sustainability in Engineering and Design (TISED), jointly hosted the fifth annual workshop and case competition on Sustainable Innovation through Green Chemistry. The event included a public lecture on "Financing and Commercializing Sustainable Solutions" outlining the innovative potential sustainability has on guiding product design and investment decisions. Howie Honeyman, CEO Forward Water Technologies, holds over 20 years of experience commercializing advanced materials and new technologies in both start-up environments and at large multi-national corporations. Mr. Honeyman described from experience the challenges and opportunities which exist for commercializing green chemistry, materials, and engineering processes. Adrian Horotan is the General Partner at Safer Made - a venture fund investing in companies and technologies that create safer alternatives for people and the environment. His talk focused on the capital and investor attention required to bring safer product innovations to market. Watch video
Leadership During Economic Crisis: Insights from the Office of Management and Budget of the U.S. Government
On February 20, 2017, McGill welcomed Shaun Donovan, former Director of the Office of Management and Budget under President Barack Obama. Mr. Donovan spoke about his time as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development following the U.S. financial crisis of 2007-2008 and provided insight into the role the federal government played in pulling the U.S. economy through the crisis. The discussion explored themes such as the role of public institutions during times of crisis, parallels between the U.S. and Canada’s economies, and the preparation for the current transition of leadership. Sebastien Betermier, Assistant Professor of Finance at Desautels, led the discussion with Mr. Donovan. This lecture was part of the Marcel Desautels Integrated Management Symposium Series. SIIL DataDive for Social Impact
On March 10-12, 2017, MDIIM's Social Innovators' Integration Lab (SIIL) hosted a hackathon-style event where participating student teams worked with data from a local social-purpose organization to provide insights to specific challenges and questions they face. For this first edition, participants worked on a challenge experienced by Share the Warmth, a community organization located in Pointe Saint-Charles that serves the surrounding community through its food security programs, youth activities, and employment training initiatives. Following a day and a half of data mining and analysis, the teams presented to staff and board members of the organization on their findings and recommendations.
Authenticity and Deception in Communications and Advertising
With the explosion of unregulated social media and fake news, how can businesses effectively inform consumers and what are the benefits of authenticity? On April 4, 2017, McGill welcomed Brian Fetherstonhaugh (BCom'79), Chairman and CEO of OgilvyOne Worldwide to reflect with Prof. Saurabh Mishra from the Marketing Area at Desautels on communications and advertising in light of the massive technological disruption occurring in the world of media.
