IMHL Logo

An ongoing forum addressing the major issues of healthcare worldwide

Henry Mintzberg

"The IMHL is unique and highly ambitious. We are setting out to change, not only education for health leadership, but the health system itself, by bringing into an ongoing forum the best of practicing leadership from all aspects of health and from all regions of the world." Professor Henry Mintzberg, Cleghorn Chair of
Management Studies & IMHL Faculty Director

The IMHL graduated its first class in May 2008 and just started its second class with more than thirty participants. This impressive group has a tremendous range of experience and comes from 13 countries around the world.

Next class is scheduled to start in November 2009. We encourage participants to apply as early as possible as we have started to receive applications from all over the world.

The program, rooted in literally decades of management research, is clearly out to change the way we think about healthcare and health management.

At the end of the first class of the IMHL, in the program evaluation the participants were asked: One word or phrase on the program...

Below are the responses of every single member of the Class:

  • Life-changing
  • Stellar
  • Outstanding
  • Excellent
  • Transforming
  • Magnificent
  • Excellent
  • A profound learning experience
  • Rich diversity
  • Personally transforming
  • Hope – it is possible to change the world
  • Crystallization and deeply-rooted
  • A course to stretch the conscious and unconscious mind
  • From one eye consider the work;
    From the other, capture the emotion;
    From the bottom of the heart, forge the path...
  • A unique experience to link the unconscious and the conscious mind of leadership
  • Transformational course that nurtures the desire to do things differently and is rich in providing the tools required to change
  • One of the best experiences of my life - great leaders learning from great leaders

The Faculties of Medicine and Management of McGill University proudly introduce the International Masters for Health Leadership (IMHL), a learning opportunity for health leaders that is radically different. It is designed to act as a catalyst in developing an integrated and sustainable approach to health, with specific impact on key issues in the participants' organizations and communities.

Dean Levin

“The Faculties of Medicine and Management have decided that there was a great opportunity in the IMHL program as - by history, by temperament, and by expertise, which rarely exist in one University at such a level – we have the capacity to make a major contribution in health internationally, and transform the way health care is managed.” Dean Richard Levin, Faculty of Medicine

Please take a few minutes to look at the more detailed materials of this website, and then contact us with any other questions. Our objectives are ambitious; we have every intention of realizing them!

Why consider an international masters for health leadership now?

You are a successful manager in health care, perhaps in a hospital in Minneapolis, public health in Ghana, health promotion and prevention in Quebec. You likely came out of professional practice, whether medicine, nursing, or other health background, which required extensive education.
