Ever since France's defeat in 1870-1 in the Franco-Prussian war, when military strength was identified with numerical superiority, demography, language and culture have become permanent parts of, and, at times, the focus of French politics.
When you go from the minors to the big leagues the game really speeds up. Athletes often mention this with a sense of awe in their voice. Partly it is that they are playing with and against the “greats” of the game; they can’t believe they are on the ice with Martin St. Louis and PK. Partly it is that the game is simply and noticeably faster. I play beer league hockey and when I go to a Canadiens game I am always amazed at how much faster they are on the ice.
From duct tape to smartphones, every great innovation started with a simple idea. Thanks to the generosity of alumni and donors, some of the game-changing ideas of the future are taking shape right now in the annual McGill Dobson Cup start-up competition.
