Powering down and reading have benefits

It's August: power down and read a good book.

That may or may not sum up your vacation plans this summer - but it is also key leadership advice. For this month's column, I am not going to suggest leadership tactics, how to best build trust or how to create a winning team with others. I am not going to talk about how to handle a difficult employee, a demanding star team member or an overly demanding boss.

... Even if you manage to resist that immediate temptation, the volume of messages leaders try to process in a day via computer, smartphone, tablet, etc. can often be monumental. Professors Henry Mintzberg and Peter Todd from McGill University write that "turning off email can be vital for a manager's ability to see the bigger picture, build trust and share vision."
