Desautels students learn that Dubai is down but not out

Published: 26 March 2010

Dubai's bubble has burst. When, if ever, will prosperity come back? That was the key question we sought to understand in a recent 10-day trip to the United Arab Emirates. In late February, a group of 24 McGill MBA and Bachelor of Commerce students travelled to the UAE to observe first-hand Dubai and Abu Dhabi's economy and try to understand its future. While Abu Dhabi has enjoyed wealth from oil reserves, Dubai - with virtually no oil - has built on its historic strengths. It has strategically positioned itself with six main economic pillars: property, finance, its port (one of the world's greatest), its airline hub, tourism and its distinction as one of the most attractive places to live in the Middle East for multinational-firm executives with Middle East and African responsibilities.
