What difference does style make in a cv and cover letter?  Are academic cv’s and cover letters different from ones designed for the business world or private sector?  What should I include?  What should I leave out?  The goal of this session is to provide you with strategies for making a positive impression on a potential employer by presenting a clear, professional and convincing cover letter and cv.

Negotiating Your Job Offer Presentation

Often, once an individual receives a coveted job offer, the hard work really starts. Negotiating the tenets of a job contract can be a stressful and daunting experience. There are a number of reasons that people are unsuccessful in negotiations or even fail to negotiate. In this presentation, I will discuss the what, why and how of negotiation in order to give attendees a head start when faced with job negotiations. The focus will be on learning some basic concepts in negotiation as well as how to overcome some of the barriers to successful negotiations.

Collaboration and the Dissertation: Getting the Most Out of Your Supervisor

The working relationship between doctoral students and their supervisors is critically important. A productive relationship requires hard work from both partners, but will increase the quality of the dissertation, decrease time to completion, and possibly result in publications. This session will draw on research into doctoral education to offer suggestions for improving communications and collaboration in the supervisor relationship.

Building Your Teaching Portfolio Presentation

This workshop will help you to approach your teaching as a graduate student with an eye toward strategies for documenting the many aspects of your teaching and effectively communicating your pedagogical skills to academic hiring committees.  The session will include a presentation, an opportunity for you to begin drafting your teaching statement, a list of resources, and a question and answer period.
