Liberals Should Support Bombardier In Order To Diversify Economy: Experts

Continued government support for global firms such as Bombardier Inc. is critical if Canada wants to diversify its economy beyond natural resources, say two business experts.

Bombardier (TSX:BBD.B) announced Wednesday it's cutting 7,000 jobs over two years, including roughly 3,000 in Canada, months after the Quebec government pledged US$1 billion of public money for the firm.

The federal Liberals say they are studying Bombardier's request for more funding, which reports say is also $1 billion.

With the announcement that Bombardier will be cutting 7,000 jobs over the next two years as it faces declining revenues and a net loss, the spotlight is now firmly on the federal government and whether it will heed the aerospace company's plea for more money.

But where some analysts see the Montreal-based firm, with its 64,000 global workforce, as a prudent investment in an important Canadian industry, others believe it may be time for Ottawa to turn off the government money tap.

There may soon be a new talent pool for Canadian financial planners and advisors to dip into when they are looking for new recruits.

That’s because McGill University in Montreal has launched a new Masters of Management in Finance course, which will run for 12months. To be part of the Desautels Faculty of Management, the course is meant to give students vital preparation ahead of a career in a host of financial sectors ranging from financial consulting to asset management, risk management and corporate finance.

A lifetime in academia

When Anita Nowak, GrDip 99, studied in the graduate diploma program of Concordia’s Department of Communication Studies, she says “a whole new world of cultural studies opened up to me.”

Upon graduation, she helped launch the Social Economy Initiative (SEI) at McGill’s Desautels Faculty of Management, serving as its integrating director for two years. The SEI was launched to integrate social entrepreneurship and social innovation into the faculty’s teaching, research and outreach.
