Marcel Desautels Institute for Integrated Management

INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT FOR A COMPLEX WORLD

The Marcel Desautels Institute for Integrated Management at the Desautels Faculty of Management develops and fosters an integrated approach to management education across all the different programs within the Faculty. Inaugurated in 2008 with a generous donation from benefactor Marcel Desautels, the Institute’s mandate is to develop an integrated approach to management that is cross-functional and encourages students to focus on the entirety of the business enterprise.

Through integrated and interdisciplinary management research and curriculum development, the IIM aims to break traditional barriers between disciplines—encouraging professors, students and industry leaders to take a more holistic approach to management. Through cross-pollination of disciplines the IIM hopes to foster innovation and more informed, responsible decision-making in today’s complex global environment.

Taking the time to understand both the whole business and all of its parts, will allow managers to make more comprehensive and intelligent decisions. The traditional functions of finance, marketing, accounting or operations should not be approached as silos, but rather as interconnected aspects of large business issues.

These goals are achieved through:

  • completely redesigning our MBA Program curriculum so as to focus on co-teaching across disciplines:
    • fostering both hard and soft skills;
    • integrating academics, research, and business practice into learning;
    • interconnecting teachings related to the public, NGO and private sectors.
  • developing integrated management programs and courses that span traditional boundaries both within the Desautels Faculty of Management and across the university/community (such as the MBA-Law and the MD-MBA programs);
  • partnering with other business schools/institutions in developing integrated and world-wise approaches to management education (IMPM program);
  • supporting research activities that examine broad management questions that work across disciplines.
