Alan has twenty-seven years of railroad experience in: Information Technology, Engineering, Operations, Marketing and Asset Management at Canadian National Railways, and four summers with CP Rail. Alan is a civil engineer with an MBA in transportation from McGill University. He is currently Director of IT Business Development and Strategic Planning at CN, reporting to the Senior Vice-president and Chief Information Officer.
Alan’s responsibilities include: IT innovation, development and implementation of IT Strategy, creation of strategic business and IT partnerships, providing technology solutions to CN Worldwide - CN’s global logistics business, and leading an internal business transformation consulting practice. Alan’s team provides thought leadership and innovation in the development and alignment of business strategies with IT investments and products; managing relationships with client departments and identifying needs and opportunities to leverage technology.
Previously, Alan led a team of senior managers in delivering the business case and executive approval for CN’s $350 million investment in modernization of asset management processes and systems, using SAP. During the project Alan was responsible for SAP project integration and also led the development and implementation of the associated Change Management effort. Alan is the founder of the Americas SAP User Group - Special Interest Group for Rail, and currently serves as its Chairman.
Alan was the IT Project Director for CN’s $150 million Service Reliability Strategy (SRS) project. SRS was the largest business and technology transformation project in Canadian railroading history; enabling CN to operate a Precision Railroad through re-tooling of core business processes and systems for rail yards, terminals, train operations, billing and customer service management.
Alan and his wife Lynn also benefit from the learning experience of having backpacked around the world for a year and a half. They have been happily married for over 24 years and currently live in Montreal with their two teenage boys.
