Dr. Paul AllisonI am a dentist with professional training in the fields of oral surgery and dental public health and research training in the field of clinical epidemiology. Broadly, my research interests concern the psychosocial and behavioural aspects of oral health and oral health care. In particular, I am interested in the evaluation of various educational interventions, the development and validation of health-related quality of life and similar instruments, the use of these instruments to describe the oral health of various populations and to evaluate the effectiveness of various interventions, and the investigation of how psychosocial factors are involved in the aetiology of oral health problems and how they effect patient prognosis. More specifically, my current research projects involve the evaluation of an educational program to prevent dental caries in infants, the validation of an instrument to assess oral health in this age group, the development and validation of an instrument to describe the oral health problems of people with Down syndrome, the evaluation of an educational program to improve coping strategies for people with head and neck cancer and an investigation of how psychosocial factors along the life course may be related to the incidence of head and neck cancers. In performing this research I am working with several research assistants, postgraduate students and post-doctoral fellows, and collaborating with researchers in the Faculties of Dentistry and Medicine at McGill, at the University of Toronto, in the USA, Brazil, France, the UK and South Africa.
