The McGill University Faculty of Dentistry Outreach Program works with more than 24 different community groups and agencies throughout the Montreal area which assist disadvantaged populations. Patients include individuals who require dental care but are ineligible for Dentcaid, do not have dental insurance or cannot afford to receive treatment in private or university clinics, or who cannot access care because of physical constraints.
Patients include the elderly, homeless persons, street people, recent immigrants, the working poor and individuals with physical or psychological challenges. For most, oral hygiene has been so neglected that they risk infection, chronic pain and serious illness. For many patients, poor oral hygiene presents social and communications obstacles.
