Centenary Conference on Levinas and Law

September 18-19, 2006

The CRC and the McGill University Faculty of Law held a major conference to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the great ethical philosopher, Emmanuel Levinas. This conference brought together major figures in the study of Levinas, law, and justice, from around the world, for a two day event on September 18 and 19, 2006. Speakers included Simon Critchley, Adam Gearey, Richard Sugarman, Adam Thurschwell, Nick Smith, Panu Minkkinen, Marinos Diamantides, Robert Gibbs, Bettina Bergo, Joseph Pugliese, and special conference rapporteur Pierre Schlag. A special exhibition "Levinas: Ethics of Encounter," curated by Dr Sandra Buckley and Lorraine Oades, took place in the Law School Atrium in conjunction with the conference. Selected papers from the conference are due to be published this year, in Essays on Levinas and Law: A Mosaic, Palgrave Macmillan, London & New York, 2008. 400pp.

 

Legal Spaces - International Roundtable for the Semiotics of Law

The Canada Research Chair in Law and Discourse played host to the annual meeting of the International Round Table for the Semiotics of Law at McGill University, Montreal, April 15-17 2005 on the theme "Legal Spaces." Over thirty-five academics participated in a roundtable discussion of the diversity of legal spaces, the law's role in the construction of social spaces, and the semiotics of law and legal signs. Abstracts of the papers presented at the Conference are available.

Select papers have been published, under the editorship of Professor Manderson, as a Special Issue of the transcontinental interdisciplinary journal Law Text Culture.
