Psychological Services

During their years at university, students may encounter significant levels of distress brought about by the effects of ongoing or situational difficulties of a psychological, emotional, or behavioural nature. At times, students may experience problematic or unpleasant thoughts and feelings or act in ways that can be disorienting and cause for concern.

The goal of counselling is to assist in the development of personal effectiveness, self-understanding and problem-solving abilities. Counselling works to alleviate distress, enhance wellness and facilitate the achievement of individual and academic success.

At the McGill Counselling Service professional counsellors and psychologists provide counselling and therapy to help students deal with a wide range of psychological and adjustment issues. A counsellor will listen closely to your concerns and provide an opportunity to develop strategies that better deal with personal challenges. Some students may be concerned that their difficulties would appear too insignificant to warrant counselling, or that their problem has no solution. The Counselling service is a good place to discuss these questions in a confidential and objective environment. In all cases, we will do our best to assist you in exploring your concerns or guide you to alternate resources should a referral be appropriate.
